Why Stretch Marks Stick Around Postpartum

Why Stretch Marks Stick Around After Giving Birth

postpartum Dec 18, 2024

Hey, mama. Can we have an honest moment?

You’re getting out of the shower, glance down at your belly, your hips, maybe your boobs... And there they are. Those lines. The ones that weren’t there before pregnancy. Maybe they’re red and fresh, maybe they’ve started to fade. Either way, you're probably wondering: Will they go away? Is this my new normal?

Let me just say this first: You’re not alone. And stretch marks? They don’t mean anything is wrong with you—they’re proof your body just did something incredible.

Let’s break it all down, together.

đź’ What Are Stretch Marks Anyway?

Think of them like tiny souvenirs from your motherhood journey—little reminders that your body grew a human.

Stretch marks happen when your skin stretches really fast, usually during big life changes (hello, pregnancy). Here’s what they typically look like:

  • Pink, red, or purple lines at first

  • Slightly raised or itchy in the early days

  • Eventually fade to silvery-white

  • Most often show up on your belly, breasts, hips, thighs, or booty

They're common. They're normal. And believe it or not—they’re kind of amazing.

🤔 Why Do Stretch Marks Show Up in the First Place?

So glad you asked.

Your Body’s Changing—FAST

  • Pregnancy turns your body into a superhero in hyperdrive

  • Your belly grows faster than your skin’s collagen can keep up

  • When that collagen stretches too far, tiny tears happen—that’s what stretch marks are

Hormones Are Having a Field Day

  • Pregnancy hormones (like cortisol) can soften skin fibers

  • Soft = stretchy, but also more prone to showing stretch marks

Thanks, Genetics

  • If your mom, aunt, or sister had stretch marks, there’s a solid chance you’ll see them too

  • Some skin types are just more stretch-mark-prone, and that’s not something you can control

🛑 Why Don’t They Just… Go Away?

Ugh, I know. Here’s the real talk:

Stretch Marks Are a Type of Scar

  • Once they form, they don’t just vanish

  • They can fade over time, but like other scars, they’re part of your skin’s story

Healing Isn’t Instant

  • Your skin’s remodeling process can take months—or even years

  • Over time, red lines often fade to soft, silvery ones

  • The best approach? Patience, hydration, and a lot of self-love

đź’§ Can You Do Anything About Them?

While there’s no magic cream to erase them, you can support your skin and help them fade more gracefully.

Hydrate + Moisturize

  • Drink your water (I know, I know—easier said than done with a baby in your arms)

  • Lather up with nourishing creams or oils (cocoa butter, shea butter, or vitamin E are fan faves)

  • Bonus points for a gentle massage to boost circulation

Feed Your Skin From the Inside

  • Load up on foods rich in:

    • Vitamin C (think berries, bell peppers, oranges)

    • Zinc (nuts, seeds, whole grains)

    • Protein (essential for skin repair—yes, your meals still matter postpartum)

Gentle Reminders to Yourself

  • Weight fluctuations are normal—especially after birth

  • Don’t be afraid to touch your skin with kindness

  • Love the body that carried your baby, even when it feels foreign

đź’› Your Body is Not Broken—It’s a Superhero

Those stretch marks? They're not something to “fix.”

They’re:

  • Evidence of the life you carried

  • Proof that your skin stretched to make space for love

  • Part of a story only your body could tell

Every mark, every line, every curve—it’s all part of the magic.

Hey there, I'm Brooke...

After my son was born prematurely with Down syndrome and needed open-heart surgery, I felt completely overwhelmed. Juggling doctor’s appointments, therapy, pumping full time, and adjusting to motherhood left me drained. I felt guilty for wanting a break and neglected my own needs, making it feel impossible to care for myself and him.

That breakdown became my breakthrough. I realized that taking care of myself wasn’t selfish—it was essential for my family. By healing my hormones and metabolism through nutrition, I gained energy, stabilized my mood, and reached my healthiest weight while producing more than enough milk (even donating hundreds of oz to babies in need).

I felt confident in my body again—wearing swimsuits, enjoying vacations, and not worrying about my milk supply. Seeing so many moms struggle with the same issues, I created The Postpartum Shift. With over 10+ years as a Registered Dietitian & Certified Lactation Counselor, I’ve helped thousands of moms get results and feel like themselves again.
